"HOW EXCELLENT IS THY NAME"

Our Church History

The Pleasant Grove Baptist Church

In the year 1870, some of God's anointed children migrated from Prince George County, near Petersburg, Virginia, and settled in Princess Anne County, Virginia, now called Virginia Beach.  With a desire to serve God in their hearts, and finding it difficult to return to Prince George for worship due to transportation difficulties and the long hard winters, these dedicated people came together to form our beloved church.  Our founding fathers were issued the deed to the original church site at 1925 Kempsville Road 111 years ago, on March 28, 1888.

Some of the founding families included the Odom family, the Gaskins family, the Bright family, the Smith family, and the Jennings family.  Many descendants of these families are currently members who represent the third and fourth generations of Pleasant Grove.  They, along with the rest of the PGBC family, continue to be dedicated to spread the good news of the gospel.

The church has had only had five pastors in its history. Reverend William Odom was the first pastor who served in 1870. His date of completion is not recorded. He was followed by Reverend E. Smith who led the church from 1910-1939. Reverend Annais Reid served as under shepherd from 1942-1954, and Reverend Leon Freeman served from 1955-1979. In 1979, the Lord sent the present pastor, Bishop William Darryl Scott Sr., who continues to lead the sheep to higher heights and deeper depths in Jesus Christ.

Under Bishop Scott's leadership, the following has been established:

The Insight

Deacon Ralph Sheppard recognized that God had a special plan for PGBC and was obedient to the leading of the Holy Spirit by offering his land at 2153 Kempsville Road to be purchased by the church. Thirteen acres were purchased ; and on July 2, 1992, ground was broken for our new edifice approximately one half mile south of the original church site. The land was cleared and the footing poured for the church that God commissioned.  On July 2, 1995, we marched into our new edifice,. On November 3, 1996 we dedicated the cornerstone.  We continue the journey to provide greater service to God, our church, and our community.

The Legacy Continues

We are grateful for the leadership of each of our former Pastors and realize that each of them have made many important contributions to our church.  Unfortunately, many of them were not recorded.

Bishop Scott has faithfully and diligently served as Pastor for the past thirty-one years. Under his leadership the church has experienced tremendous growth in ministries and members. The membership has grown from one hundred fifty members to over 2,500. As a result, additional building space was added to accommodate the ministry needs: eight new classrooms, a deacon's office, trustee's office, and a prayer room were completed in October 1998. God has richly blessed the ministerial staff to increase and support the ministry of the church. Bishop Scott has licensed over 38 associate ministers. Many currently serve under his leadership and include his wife, Reverend Joyce Rose Scott. To date, approximately forty-eight deacons have been ordained to serve. The church is currently in the process of re-organizing the Diaconate and Trustee Ministries to handle the fiduciary responsibilities of the church.

With love and appreciation, we pause to remember and give thanks to the many people who contributed to the physical and spiritual development of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.  We praise God for the contributions of our founders and those who were committed to a life of service such as Deacon Ralph Sheppard, who gave of his own increase; Sister Thelma Sykes, who left a legacy to each of our youth;  Deacon John Dixon, who taught us the meaning of what it is to be a "doorkeeper in the house of the Lord";  Mother Marion Gilchrist, who taught us how to be humble; and Deacon George Midgette, who always reminded us that we must prepare to "Walk in Jerusalem".

We pay a special tribute to those who work tirelessly to make sure that we continue to build on a Godly foundation.  We thank them for their guidance, leadership, and obedience to the will of God that has led to the increase in each of our ministries.  We give praise and honor to our God for so richly blessing us during the past 141 years.  He has given us the increase in every sphere of the church, and we endeavor to continue to serve Him.  We will endeavor to continue to make Pleasant Grove Baptist Church the representation of God's Kingdom here on earth.

O LORD, OUR LORD HOW EXCELLENT IS THY NAME IN ALL THE EARTH!
